Why I teach adults art vs kids
Let's discuss the art of teaching.
Teaching adults how to explore something they never believed they could do, but always held an interest in, such as art, is an incredibly fulfilling experience. Have you ever taught a child something new and witnessed the sheer amazement on their face? Their entire expression lights up, and they eagerly continue practicing. When teaching adults, a similar reaction is observed, but the satisfaction is magnified a thousandfold for me.
Unlike babies who are new to everything, adults come with a lifetime of experiences that may have shaped their beliefs and perceptions. They may have been discouraged from pursuing art as a career, been advised to focus on practicality, or been made to feel that art is only for children. Some adults may have lost touch with their creative side due to family responsibilities or societal pressures. Teaching a baby something new is like introducing them to the world, while teaching adults is like reigniting a spark of discovery within them.
As a teacher, my role is to provide lessons that help students either develop new skills or rediscover those they may have lost touch with. Drawing from my certification as a holistic and wellness coach, I incorporate coaching techniques into my art classes. By asking thought-provoking questions and guiding students to explore their inner thoughts and struggles, I help them express themselves through their artwork. This process enables them to confront and overcome negative self-perceptions and barriers that may have hindered their creativity.
Children are often free from self-limiting beliefs and restrictions, whereas adults may carry deep-seated doubts and criticisms from their past experiences. Teaching adults is a more challenging yet rewarding endeavor because it involves helping them navigate through mental obstacles and societal conditioning that may have held them back from pursuing their artistic passions.
Witnessing adults leave my classes feeling happier, inspired, and more connected to their creativity is truly a remarkable experience. It is a privilege to guide grown individuals, burdened by life's challenges and negativity, towards rediscovering the joy and fulfillment that art can bring into their lives.
